Phong Nha Travel Guide: You Have To Visit Here!
This comprehensive Phong Nha travel guide provides all necessary information for planning your visit to one of Vietnam’s most serene and authentic destinations. We’ll detail budgets, activities, accommodations, dining options, pitfalls to avoid, and itinerary suggestions tailored to your stay duration in Phong Nha, Vietnam.
We’ve been to Phong Nha twice and spent 1 month during the last stay – considerably longer than the typical 3-day stay! By the third day, we were familiar with most of the area, or at least the basic layout. Here, we share our favorite activities and places in Phong Nha and the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, suitable for various types of travelers.
Phong Nha is often unfairly compared to Ninh Binh by those who haven’t visited. While both are accessible from Hanoi, Phong Nha’s more secluded location means fewer crowds and a distinct experience, making both worth visiting.
Ideal Time to Visit Phong Nha
Wondering when to visit Phong Nha Ke Bang national park? Phong Nha’s weather is most favorable from January to August, the dry season. Expect excellent weather every third day, if not more frequently. March to May is particularly delightful, though it can become hot and humid by June-August. Avoid visiting during the typhoon season from mid-September to November. Our personal favorites are January and February, before the peak tourist season.

Caving in Phong Nha, Vietnam
Phong Nha is celebrated for its world-class caving adventures. Since the ’90s, when British cavers were first allowed to explore, about 400 caves have been discovered in the Phong Nha Ke Bang area. There’s a cave for every visitor, regardless of budget or time constraints.
Dark Cave Phong Nha
The last stop on the Phong Nha Ke Bang national park Loop, Dark Cave offers adventurous budget experiences. Start with a zip-line to the cave’s entrance, followed by canoeing. Essential gear like life vests and helmets with headlamps are provided. The cave lives up to its name, leading to a mud pool where you can play before swimming in the cave and ending at a water adventure park (safety as of February 2020 is questionable).
Phong Nha Paradise Cave
Accessible and affordable, Paradise Cave can be explored independently for 1 km or on a guided National Park Tour. The adult ticket is 250,000 VND (approximately $10 USD)
For a more in-depth experience, a 7 km guided trek reveals stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and a doline. The cost was approximately 2,650,000VND per person ($112.77 USD), ages 10 and above. It’s a must-visit if time permits only one cave exploration.
Phong Nha Cave
The first cave discovered by British explorers and open to the public, Phong Nha Cave is a river cave. Access it without a guided tour by heading to the tourism center, purchasing tickets, and taking a local “dragon boat” up the river.
Above Phong Nha Cave is Tien Son cave, requiring a 500-step hike but offering spectacular views and formations.
The entrance fee for adults is 150,000 VND (approximately $7 USD). Children under 1.3 meters in height can enter for free. The entrance to Tien Son is 80,000VND ($4 USD) per person.
There’s also a boat service to visit the caves, costing 550,000 VND ($24 USD) per boat, accommodating up to 12 guests, including children.
Son Doong / Hang En
Son Doong, the world’s largest known cave, boasts towering stalagmites and a unique ecosystem. Discovered in 1991 and explored in 2009 by the British Speleological Association, it’s a premium attraction with a price tag of 70 million VND or around $3000USD per person. It is a 6-day and 5-night tour with everything provided except for personal belongings.
Phong Nha offers much more than caves, including rich, unexplored culture.
