From climbing the peaks of the Andes to swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Galapagos Islands, incredible experiences await you at every turn. Make yourself comfortable as we are going to dive into an exciting journey through all the wonders of Ecuador!
1. High-altitude capital Quito
We began our exciting one-week itinerary in Ecuador, of course, with Quito, the capital of Ecuador. This city, set in a fertile valley more than 2,800 meters above sea level, delights with its unique cityscape and historical heritage. The city has an international airport, which is one of the busiest in South America. Not surprisingly, this is the place to start your Ecuador adventure. Similarly, another famous high altitude city is Cusco – an essential part of any Peru itinerary.
Walking along the streets of Quito, you will immediately feel the atmosphere of the confluence of the old and the new. As a complement to its historical heritage, Quito is also known for its modern achievements – it was the first city to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is where we started our adventures, however, this was just the beginning and there were so many interesting and beautiful places ahead of us.
What is the best place to go in Quito for a tourist from another country?
Teleferico cable car
Start your journey with a breathtaking climb up the Teleferico Cable Car to an altitude of 4,100 meters. From this height, you’ll have an incredible view of the city and the mighty volcanoes.
Carolina Central Park and Botanical Gardens
For lovers of nature and recreation, Carolina Central Park and its botanical garden will be a real corner of peace. You will be able to stroll along the picturesque alleys.
Gothic Cathedral Basilica del Voto Nacional
This cathedral is sometimes even called the second Notre Dame, which will definitely amaze you with its beauty. And for those who want to take a beautiful photo, you can go up to the observation deck on the rooftop.
Intinan Museum (Sun Museum)
This is an interesting place to explore the mysteries of the sun. This museum is a unique opportunity to learn more about the tribes of Ecuador, their culture and the calendar based on the movement of the sun.
2. Galapagos Islands – a paradise place in Ecuador
Our Ecuador itinerary gave us not only amazing moments in the capital but also the opportunity to travel to a true paradise – the Galapagos Islands. This unique archipelago of 18 islands has incredible natural beauty and a wealth of species that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. On our itinerary, we managed to visit 4 islands and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience that is worth every moment.
The best places in the Galapagos Islands for family vacations
- Isabela Island and volcanoes. On Isabela Island, known for its five volcanoes, we encountered natural wonders. Climbing the Sierra Negra and Chico volcanoes proved to be an unforgettable adventure, although halfway up we walked through thick fog.
- North Seymour Island. Next on the list for our one week in Ecuador was North Seymour Island, which we only found an hour of time for, but it was enough to see the magnificent iguanas that are constantly hiding from the scorching sun under huge cacti.
- Bartolomé Island. On the next island, we were finally able to dive into the water of the Pacific Ocean and observe the underwater world. We went down into the water in special wetsuits to stay warm and were able to encounter several large turtles and a group of sharks. As the guides told us, sharks are not at all dangerous for people.
- Santa Cruz Island. This island has its own small town where more than 15,000 people live today. Even though there are expensive restaurants here, we decided to buy crabs right off the hands of fishermen and a local cafe cooked them for just a few dollars. It’s a great lifehack on how to save money on seafood delicacies.
3. El Cajas National Park
The next destination during our exciting one week in Ecuador took us to the south of the country, to the magical El Cajas National Park. The park is home to over 200 beautiful lakes. And if you look up, you’ll see majestic mountain peaks that look like they were carved out of books. El Cajas National Park impresses with its variety of picturesque landscapes.
The best hotels to stay near El Cajas Park
The closest city to El Cajas Park is Cuenca, which is 35 kilometers from the park. There are dozens of comfortable hotels in this city, but we decided to give you a list of the best 4 hotels in this city.:
- Four Points by Sheraton Cuenca – a modern hotel located in the heart of Cuenca city center. Its convenient location makes it an ideal option.
- Aleros Hotel Boutique – a new hotel that opened in 2022, and it is close to all the important attractions of the city.
- Casa de las Rosas – a hotel that is conveniently located near the airport. This will allow you to easily reach the hotel and start your adventure without any hassle.
- Villa Emilia Hostal – a great place to stay, especially if you are traveling with friends or family. This villa has everything you need for a comfortable vacation.
Montañita Beach – the place where surfers from all over the world gather
The last place on our 8-day itinerary Ecuador was Montañita Beach. This is the place where strong winds blow all year round and excellent waves form, which have become a real magnet for surfers from all over the continent. We, new to this exciting discipline, decided to take lessons from an instructor and as a result we were able to master our first wave. We highly recommend everyone to try surfing, even if it is their first experience in water sports.
Montañita Beach is impressive in its length, where you can enjoy the open spaces and natural beauty while feeling relaxed and comfortable. At the time of our visit there was a festival and surfers’ competition. We enjoyed watching the skills of professional athletes who were literally «jumping» on the waves.
Where to enjoy a delicious meal in Montagnita Beach?
After an active activity on the water, there is always an appetite, and Montagnita Beach will not leave you without a choice of where to enjoy a delicious meal and relax in a vacation atmosphere.
- Dharma Beach Restaurant – a restaurant located right on the ocean shore. Most of the menu of this institution is made up of fresh seafood.
- Coco Jungle – a place where you can taste international dishes and enjoy great cocktails in a cozy bar.
- Pigro Homemade Italian Food – here you can enjoy a slice of Italy while on the shores of Montagnita.
- Lido Beach Grill – a picnic on the beach with the aroma of a grill and fresh beer – what better way to end an active day?
5 tips to make your one week in Ecuador unforgettable
Holidays in Ecuador promise to be an unforgettable adventure and to make it truly memorable, it’s important to consider a few tips that we came face-to-face with.
1. Temperature. Despite the endless summer in Ecuador, remember that temperatures can vary greatly from place to place. If you are traveling to the mountains, you will need to wear a warm jacket even in the summertime.
2. Hold items with you. Ecuador’s tourist areas can be a lure for scammers and pickpockets. It is important to be vigilant and keep your valuables with you at all times.
3. Take small bills with you. Large bills such as $50 or $100 in Ecuador may not always be convenient for payment in stores and restaurants. They are often not accepted. Therefore, prepare small bills in advance.
4. Bar and restaurant expenses. Most places, including bars, restaurants, and hotels, automatically add a tip of about 10% to the bill in the receipt.
5. The best time to visit Ecuador. The best time to visit is from August to February. However, if you dream of surfing, it is worth paying attention to January – this is when the biggest waves can be found on the coast.
We hope this article, our tips, and our Ecuador itinerary will help you discover the best places in Ecuador. We wish you a pleasant vacation and interesting adventures!
